In Kazakhstan, an MBBS degree typically requires 5 to 6 years of study. Each university will have its own level of required study for that particular university. The MBBS degree program itself consists of a comprehensive medical education, which is divided into 2 phases: preclinical (basic science courses) and clinical (patient care). The undergraduate phase for the MBBS covers the basic medical science courses, such as anatomical structure, physiological function, biochemical processes, and basic diseases (pathology).
The second half of the education for the MBBS consists of an exposure to many types of patients through clinical rotations, where students learn and see how to apply their education to different disciplines, including internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics, and community medicine. The clerkship, or clinical portion, includes seeing patients and doing clinical procedures under the supervision of a physician.
The teaching methods used for the MBBS program include lectures, laboratory work, clinical sessions, and clinical education. Most universities use current methods for teaching and also have many forms of technological aid to assist in the teaching process. In addition, the MBBS curriculum is, in many cases, aligned with that of International Medical Education Standards (IMES), which helps prepare students for international medical licensure examinations.
