Introduction
PGIMER: The Full Form and Vision
In 1962, the PGI was established as a result of an initiative taken by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who had the foresight to see that when India gained independence, it needed to have Medical Institutions of World Class Quality to fulfill the Health Care Needs of its large population, as well as encourage the advancement of Medical Science and expand opportunities for Super Specialty Courses in India. Thus, the PGI was designed to fulfill several important functions.
- Advanced Education in Medicine
To develop a world-class center of excellence in postgraduate & super-specialty training to prepare physicians, surgeons & medical scientists to achieve international quality.
- Research in Medicine
- Tertiary Care Healthcare
- Standards Development
To provide an internationally recognized model institution that provides standardized medical education and quality of care in India
MBBS Program at PGIMER
- Why PGIMER Started MBBS
- National Need – India needs doctors, and the country is short of doctors. India’s doctor-to-population ratio is far below the WHO requirement. Every new MBBS seat created is a step toward addressing this shortage.
- Continuity of Education – By adding MBBS programs, PGIMER will be able to support the education of medical professionals at its earliest level and possibly be able to identify and develop future academic physicians and academic researchers earlier in their careers than if they attend another medical college.
- Efficient Utilization of All Resources – PGIMER has exceptional infrastructure (i.e., modern hospitals, dedicated and experienced faculty, extensive research facilities, and clinical materials) to support the teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
- Government Directive – The Government of India has encouraged India’s premier medical colleges to expand the number of MBBS seats they offer as part of the broader strategy of developing the healthcare workforce.
