Can You Do PG in India After MBBS Abroad?

Can You Do PG in India After MBBS Abroad?
The best and most straightforward answer is yes. But there are some specific requirements.
To pursue a Postgraduate degree in India after MBBS abroad, you need to clear licensing examinations, do a compulsory internship, get an appropriate registration and follow the regulations, which are changing rapidly. If you miss any aspect of this process, you may find yourself unable to practice in India and/or unable to specialize, even after many years and a significant financial investment.
Once you are licensed to practice medicine you can consider postgraduate studies in India. For Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), FMGE is the first and most important obstacle on their path to being licensed.

FMGE is an entry-level screening test conducted by the National Board of Exams in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) for all individuals seeking licensure as physicians in India who have completed their primary medical education outside India. Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) testing is mandatory in order for FMGs to obtain a provisional registration or permanent registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the State Medical Council (SMC) to practice medicine in India and/or enter residency programs and/or specialize in any area of medicine.

The FMGE is conducted twice a year: June/December of each year, and the December 2025 Exam date is scheduled for January 17, 2026.
  • Computer-Based Test of 300 M/C Questions
  • 2 Parts: Part A (150 Questions) & Part B (150 Questions)
  • Duration: 2.5 hours per part or a total of 5 hours
  • Scoring: +1 mark per correct response. There is no negative marking.
  • Passing Score: Minimum of 150 out of 300 (50%)
  • Exam Language: English Only
  • Application Fee: ₹6195 for FMGE 2025

FMGE Eligibility

To be eligible for FMGE, you must meet the following requirements if you are an Indian Citizen who completed your Medical Studies outside of India. You will need to provide either Indian Citizenship or OCI, a Primary Medical Qualification from a recognized Medical Institution of the Country you studied in and a FMGE Pass Certificate for applying to the MC/MCI Register.

Eligible Criteria

An applicant must be either an Indian Citizen or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI).

An applicant who is a Citizen of Pakistan or completed their Medical Studies in Pakistan is required to review the updated guidelines and obtain Security Clearance from the National Board of Examinations for Medical Sciences (NBEMS).

The University attended must be recognized by the Medical Authority of the country where it is located (e.g., European Countries, GCC Countries, etc.).

Listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS).

This is very important; No matter whether you completed your Medical Studies Abroad but did not complete NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test), you will not be eligible to take the FMGE or to practice in India. NEET is not negotiable.

An applicant must have an Eligibility Certificate issued by the NMC.

Common Mistakes That Derail PG Plans

Through our experience in advising thousands of international medical graduates, we have noticed the following serious errors in how foreign medical graduates undertake their PG education in India:
The largest error we see is that many students leave for their International medical education without having taken the NEET. Many students believe that they will only be able to practice medicine in their new country and will never return to India. However, once they finish their FMGE and want to return to India, they realise that they will never be able to get NMC registration.
If a student attends a university that does not have NMC accreditation, they will not be able to take the FMGE, which is a waste of years and a large amount of lakhs (Rs./dollars).

Some universities have an internship of only 6-12 months. Others do not include an internship as part of their curriculum. This has significant ramifications for Indian licensure.

Historically, FMGE has one of the lowest pass rates. In India, on average, 20-30% of FMGE candidates will pass. Candidates who do not take this requirement seriously or who delay taking the test will lose valuable years.
All documents originating from outside of India that are being submitted for NMC registration should be properly attested in the foreign country where you studied. Failure to properly attest documents to the Indian Embassy in that country will lead to FMGE application rejection and delays in NMC registration.

FMGE Pass Rates

  • Nepal 30% overall FMGE pass rate
  • Bangladesh 26.79% overall FMGE pass rate
  • Kyrgyzstan 12 – 31% FMGE pass rate (depends on university)
  • Armenia 16.9% (combined 2019-2022)
  • Philippines traditionally higher
  • Russia has moderate-to-good pass rates with adequate preparation.

Challenges In FMGE

Foreign MBBS programs use different teaching methods and clinical practices than Indian medical education. The FMGE exam assesses physicians’ knowledge of Indian medical standards.
The FMGE has its own unique set of MCQs (multiple-choice questions) and question phrasing that can vary considerably from foreign exams; therefore, FMGE test-takers must prepare specifically for that format.
Over 20,000 foreign graduates take the FMGE test each year, and there is a limited number of those who pass, making the competition extremely high.
Many foreign universities do not give enough clinical experience to their students in relation to an Indian medical college, and therefore, these students often struggle with the practical application of theoretical knowledge to clinical questions.

Ways to Succeed in FMGE

  • Early Preparation: Start studying for the FMGE test during the 4th-5th year of medical school, not just after you finish medical school
  • Take Coaching Classes: Attending a quality FMGE coaching program has been shown to increase candidate pass rate dramatically.
  • Focus on Indian Guidelines: Study using Indian medicine guidelines and protocols
Practice Prior Papers: Make sure to solve at least 5 years of prior FMGE papers
  • Understand the Exam: Familiarise yourself with the MCQ test format and practice managing your time
  • Connect Theory to Practice: Be able to relate theoretical knowledge to clinical situations
  • Continuing Attempts: If a candidate does not pass their FMGE exam, do not get discouraged and keep attempting.

NMC Registration Process After FMGE

FMGE has been passed successfully. But now it’s time for you to start in your new role as a medical practitioner and continue with your further education through a postgraduate (PG) programme.

After you pass FMGE, you’re going to need to apply for provisional registration from either the National Medical Commission (NMC) or from your local state medical council (SMC). The provisional registration allows you to begin your compulsory medical internship in India.
  • FMGE Pass Certificate
  • MBBS Degree Certificate (certified true copy)
  • Certificate of Completion of 12 Months Of Foreign Internship
  • Passport and Visa Documents
  • NEET Scorecard
  • Character Certificate
  • Medical Fitness Certificate
  • Recent Photographs
You must complete an internship of 12 months under the supervision of an accredited Indian medical college or hospital, including rotations through all major departments, in order to be eligible for permanent registration with the NMC or SMC.
Once you’ve completed your internship in India, you may then apply for permanent registration from either the NMC or SMC. Once registered as a medical doctor with the NMC or SMC, you will be allowed to practise without any further restrictions in India.
Once you have obtained permanent registration as a medical doctor, you will then be able to take the NEET PG examination and be eligible for postgraduate medical seats in India.
