About JIPMER, Puducherry
The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, is one of the premier Indian medical colleges. The institution was formed in 1823 as an “Ecole de Medicine, Pondicherry” during French colonial rule. JIPMER is one of Asia’s oldest medical institutions and is known for its specialty in tropical medicine. The medical school became a Government of India institution in 1956, when the French-colonized state of Puducherry joined India. In 1964, the college was renamed to honor Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, and was then opened as JIPMER by President Dr. S. Radhakrishnan in Chennai.
In 2008, JIPMER Puducherry was designated as an “Institute of National Importance” through a parliamentary act and has been granted autonomy under the Government of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The college and institute are located on a 192-acre campus in Gorimedu, Puducherry, and provide quality medical education with outstanding research capabilities and excellent patient care.

Student Life at JIPMER Puducherry
- Student Accommodation
JIPMER’s hostel network has developed 14 separate hostels in total that collectively house around 1,100 students, of which there are two male-only and one female-only hostel. The hostels contain rooms of different types, which can be single, double, or triple occupancy. Hostel room furnishings include a bed, a study table, a chair, and a cupboard. All of the hostels also have 24-hour electricity and running water, high-speed Wi-Fi, on-site laundry facilities, and at least one common room with a TV. All hostels are monitored by 24-hour security and are equipped with a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera system. Common study groups may use hostels’ designated study areas that have appropriate seating and large reading tables.

- Mess and Dining Facilities
There is a single common mess for all three hostels that serves North Indian and South Indian dishes. The standard advance payment amount for boarding charges for each semester is ₹6,000, with a monthly charge to use the mess between ₹2,000 and ₹2,500, depending on usage.
