Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya

Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya (TAMV) is a great choice if you want to learn about Indian traditional medicine and the ancient practice of healing.
Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya

Overview

Founded in 1933 during the Swadeshi movement, this college has been a vital part of Pune’s community for nearly 90 years. It serves as an important link between Vedic knowledge and its use in today’s world. Along with providing education, TAMV, one of the oldest and most respected Ayurvedic colleges in India, offers students the opportunity to study the “Science of Life.”

The Campus

Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya (TAMV), established in the year 1933, is one of the oldest and most prestigious Ayurvedic colleges in India. Located in the heart of Pune at Rasta Peth, the campus blends a rich 90-year heritage with functional medical infrastructure. The Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya campus combines a rich 90-year legacy with a bustling clinical environment, providing students with direct access to one of Pune’s most active Ayurvedic hospitals.
  • Street Address: Numbered fifty-eight three two, at Rasta Peth near Daruwala Bridge in Pune city – postal code four eleven one one.
  • Size: Approximately 2 acres.
  • Accessibility: It is centrally located, roughly 2.8 km from Pune Junction Railway Station and about 10 km from Pune International Airport.
A major part of the “campus experience” is the clinical exposure. While the college is the academic hub, it is closely integrated with several healthcare centers:
  • Seth Tarachand Ramnath Charitable Ayurvedic Hospital: An attached 340-bedded hospital providing extensive clinical and surgical exposure.
  • Nanal Rugnalaya & Mehendale Dawakhana: Additional clinical facilities under the same management that serve as practical training grounds.

Academic Excellence

Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya (TAM), one of the best schools for Ayurvedic education in India, is consistently at or near the top when it comes to ranking among AYUSH colleges in medical programs throughout the AYUSH system, which covers the five areas of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Siddha, and Homoeopathy. Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya ranking is ‘A’ by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) for the 2024-2025 academic year, which is one indication that their students and faculty members are doing a tremendous job preparing graduates to practice Ayurveda.
As stated previously, TAM was awarded an “A” Grade rating by the NCISM as part of its 2024–2025 ranking process, and it placed 44th on its national list of best Ayurvedic colleges from all 5 branches of the AYUSH system.
TAM is also frequently listed as one of the top 5 BAMS colleges in India for the 2026 educational outlook from various sources that provide a “best of” list of academic institutions based upon student outcomes, such as high levels of patient care and good training for students to obtain employment in clinical practice following graduation. In any of the many cases where TAM is included as one of the best BAMS colleges in India, its ranking shows that it is consistently able to maintain 5th place among AYUSH schools throughout the country for its clinical experiences due to the high number of patients seen by students in its training programs.
In the State of Maharashtra, TAM is generally within the top three rankings among government-funded Ayurvedic colleges, competing with RA Podar College (Mumbai) and the Government Ayurvedic College (Nagpur) for first place almost every year.

Programs for Academics

Bachelor’s and doctoral degrees are among the many degrees offered by the Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya (TAMV). They are approved by NCISM, have ties to the State University of Medicine and Health Services in Nashik, and offer everything but basic medicine. A 5-1/2 year bachelor’s degree in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery is one of the Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya courses offered to prospective students. There are also numerous (14) specialty postgraduate degrees in both clinical and non-clinical fields.
Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery Bachelor’s Degree
  • Degree duration: five years plus a year-long clinical internship
  • Admission Capacity: 125 total spots available each year
  • Admission: Based on NEET-UG scores; state or national counseling will determine the remaining admission requirements.

The Faculty

Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya faculty combine modern clinical training with traditional knowledge. As of 2026, the faculty consists of approximately 80 full-time academic staff members, including highly accomplished Professors, Associate Professors, and Assistant Professors across 14 academic departments.
The faculty at TAMV also includes some of the most experienced faculty members — educational credentials include MD/PhD and more than 15-20 years of teaching and clinical experience at the associated Seth Tarachand Ramnath Hospital.
The faculty members conduct research in their respective areas of expertise and publish in many peer-reviewed journals, such as the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrated Medicine (JAIM).
In addition to being on the cutting edge of their fields, the faculty members are known for being very supportive and accessible to students, particularly during their clinical rotations, scoring between 3.5 and 4.0 out of 5.0 on student surveys.
The faculty members have also been recognized by both organizations for their contributions by receiving the “Best Teacher Award” and “Karyakushal” awards to recognize the academic and administrative excellence of both teaching and non-teaching staff.

Research Infrastructure at TAMV

TAMV offers students access to an extensive research infrastructure that integrates the scientific study of Ayurveda with the traditional Ayurvedic system of health. The research infrastructure at TAMV supports undergraduate and post-graduate (PhD) students as it is affiliated with Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and is supported by the government of India.
  • Central and Departmental Laboratories: Both the central and departmental educational laboratories are designated for a particular area of research. For instance, there are various laboratories for the purpose of research in the areas of herbal and drug testing laboratory and laboratory for the term pathology and department of commerce.
  • Centre for Post Graduate Studies and Research: This is a special research facility established specifically to carry out the MD/MS and PhD studies and research. The quality of the research done at this facility must meet both the regulations laid down by the Central Government of India and also the quality requirements.
  • Animal House Access: The major areas of research at TAMV are in the areas of clinical and botanical therapy, and the institution has various collaborative arrangements for conducting animal-based research (e.g., students can use a facility shared with the Bharati Vidyapeeth) as required to complete pharmacological research.

International Recognition

Owing to its almost century-old existence and its contribution to churning out extremely skilled medical professionals, Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya (TAMV) is considered one of the premier destinations for learning Ayurvedic education in the international community. The pass-out list of TAMV consists of a staggering 7,000+ UG and 1,100+ PG students. The majority of these pass-outs are already practicing in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia, thus making the college known for producing competent medical professionals. The Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya recognition is well-established due to its association with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS).

Student Life & Facilities

  • Cafeteria: Offers clean and economical eating facilities, although some student feedback indicates that it is quite basic, and most students favor the local mess facilities available in the nearby areas.
  • Sports: Though the college is situated in a densely populated urban area, it has indoor game facilities (chess, carrom) and some outdoor games like volleyball and badminton.
  • Research: The college has a Center for Post-Graduate Studies and Research in Ayurved within its campus.
Because of its heritage status and its location in a central urban area, the campus is more “urban and compact” than “spacious and green,” although it is highly acclaimed for its quality and quantity of academic and clinical output.

Tuition Rates

The Tilak Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya fees during the academic year (2025/2026) will be Rs. 52,200/- (for General Candidates) and Rs. 92,500/- (for each MD/MS postgraduate).
