After weeks of confusion, stress, and uncertainty following the NEET UG 2026 paper leak and cancellation, the NTA has announced the re-examination date, and here is the complete, clear breakdown of what has happened and what students need to do:

The official announcement by the NTA & Government of India date for NEET (UG) will take place on June 21st, 2026, on the website on May 15th, 2026, and has brought required clarity for over 22 lakh medical aspirants who have been in confusion since their original exam was cancelled.

NTA Official Statement

The National Testing Agency (NTA), with the approval of the Government of India, has scheduled the re-examination of NEET (UG) 2026 to be conducted on Sunday, 21st June 2026.

What happened: a quick recap

The NEET UG 2026 was originally held on May 3, 2026, throughout India. Approximately 5,404 centres were utilized during the test administration. However, just nine days after the initial administration, i.e., May 12, 2026, the NTA ultimately decided to cancel the NEET UG 2026 examination after having received multiple allegations of a coordinated test paper leak.

According to reports, before the administration of the exam, a guess paper with over 400 questions, including over 120 identical to actual exam questions in biology, was circulated.

The CBI registered an FIR under the criminal conspiracy provisions, cheating, criminal breach of trust, destruction of evidence, and other provisions of both the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. The NEET UG 2026 controversy subsequently created shockwaves throughout the education system in India and caused an uproar amongst medical students, parents, educators, and similar individuals throughout India.

What should students do right now?

Now that the re-exam date has been confirmed, students have approximately 5 weeks to prepare. Instead of worrying or thinking about what has happened previously, it’s time to start over again, rethink, and resume studying. Use this time wisely by going back to all the chapters where you don’t feel confident, taking full-length mock tests with a timer, and building up your endurance for a 3.5-hour-long test.

Follow the official NTA website to know when they will release NEET admit cards for the re-exam and future updates about the test being administered. Do not use third-party websites or notice boards of coaching centres as your only sources of truth.

Is the exam under legal scrutiny?

The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has filed a petition before the Supreme Court against what it alleges is a systemic failure on the part of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and is asking for a re-examination to take place under court supervision.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting that the states be allowed to take into consideration students’ marks in their Class XII examinations for admissions for 2026-27, stating that he finds the centralised admission process through NEET to be fundamentally flawed. Both the legal and political processes are still in progress; therefore, students need to continue preparing for examinations regardless of ongoing work, as the date of June 21 is the official date at this time.
