NEET Marks vs Rank: Quick Overview

Your NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) score plays the biggest role in determining your All India Rank (AIR) after the completion of the exam and the available medical institutions (government or private medical colleges) during the counselling process.

In 2025, there were over 20 lakh candidates who registered to participate in NEET UG 2026. Given how many candidates were tested in this one examination, the competition for available spots at medical institutions was also extremely tight. For instance, a difference of 5 marks on your raw score can cause your rank to move by tens of thousands.

Below you will find a summary of the NEET score range and estimated AIR ranking ranges for the top-level general category.

NEET Score RangeEstimated AIR (General)
680 – 7201 – 1,000 AIR Estimate
620 – 6791,001 – 15,000 AIR Estimate
580 – 61915,001 – 50,000 AIR Estimate
540 – 57950,001 – 1,00,000 AIR Estimate
480 – 5391,00,001 – 2,50,000 AIR Estimate

How the Marks vs Rank Chart will Aid Medical School Applicants

The NEET marks vs rank chart is primarily based on previous National Testing Agency (NTA) data that maps the raw score of the NEET to an estimated AIR.

Thus, the NEET marks vs rank chart will help students to better understand their position among all candidates who took the NEET and identify which medical colleges may be realistic options before official counselling begins.

Why Do Small Differences in Raw Scores Make Such an Impact on Rank?

Thousands of students will receive scores in the range of 500-600 on the NEET. As such, many students are scoring within the 500-600 mark band, a change of only 10 points could move your rank to 20,000-30,000 positions higher. Thus, making each mark contributes to your overall position significantly.

How We Built This NEET Marks vs Rank Analysis

We created the NEET Marks Vs Rank analysis using freely available NTA scores to produce a statistical dataset on the NEET 2023, 2024 and 2025 exam results and on the NTA and MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) cut-off trends. The use of statistical analysis of real NEET marks data provides realistic estimates for MBBS aspirants.

The statistical analysis of official NTA data and the MCC/State’s opening and closing rank data provide the basis for determining the NEET Marks Vs Rank.

All the mappings of rank to score referenced in this document came from NTA and MCC/State’s real results, and therefore, the estimates are based on previous years’ NTA data and counselling trends

Why This Chart Is an Estimate, Not a Promise

Predictions of Rank are based upon the actual average score for the MD program, the number of candidates who take the examination, and the methods the NTA uses in weighting each score across all candidates. Because the paper is a standards-based instrument, you should not take these numbers as a guarantee of what you will receive.

NEET Marks vs Rank Year-Wise Trend in India

Yearly trends allow for a better understanding of how the neet mark vs rank ratio has changed and what students might expect in 2026.

NEET 2024 Marks vs Rank

NEET 2024 had several issues (grace marks and paper leaks), final ranks were generated based on revised NTA data.

Marks (Out of 720)Expected All India Rank (General Category)
700 – 7201 – 250
650 – 699250 – 8,000

NEET 2023 Marks vs Rank

NEET 2023 is considered the baseline year for direct mapping of NEET marks or rank.

Marks (Out of 720)Expected All India Rank (General Category)
690 – 7201 – 500

Expected Rank by Score Bands

700 to 650 Marks Range

Scores from 650-700 generally fall within AIR 1–8,000. Candidates scoring in this range likely have a strong chance to gain admission into the best government medical colleges, including:

  • All India Institute of Medical Sciences
  • Maulana Azad Medical College
  • Vardhman Mahavir Medical College

You may have a strong chance of securing a government MBBS seat through AIQ counselling.

649 to 600 Marks Range

Scores from 649-600 will generally have a place from about 8,000-40,000. These scores will generally allow you to gain admission into good state government colleges and also have access to good dental options, as well as many deemed universities.

599 to 550 Marks Range

Anyone scoring 599-550 should expect a place from about 40,000-120,000. Those scoring in this range may have limited success in applying for AIQ government seats; therefore, it is very important to secure a place in the appropriate state quota. There are also private medical colleges and deemed universities available for students at these scores.

Below 550 Marks

Those scoring below 550 will generally have a place greater than 120,000. Simply qualifying will not guarantee admission to a government medical college. Therefore, anyone below 550 can apply for admission to the AYUSH/BDS private colleges, as well as to international medical schools.

NEET Percentile, Qualifying Marks, and Cutoff Explained

Qualifying Marks vs Admission Marks

The general (50th percentile) score provided by the NEET will indicate you qualify for the opportunity to attend the counselling session; it will not guarantee you a position for the MBBS study. Admission Marks, respective colleges determine their cutoff, which will be much higher.

How Are the Percentiles Related to Rank?

Calculation of Percentiles is based on your score as compared to the total number of candidates: Percentile = (Total Candidates Scored Less Than Used ÷ Total Number of Candidates In Test) x 100. A Percentile within the 99th Percentile in 2025 would correspond to an All India Rank of approximately 2200 based on a Country-Wide Attendance of approximately 22,00,000.

Factors That Change NEET Marks vs Rank Every Year

Paper Difficulty and Score Clustering

The difficulty level of the exam and score clustering heavily influence yearly marks vs rank trends. An easier NEET exam will cause more NEET applicants to score between 580 and 640 points, thereby creating more competition within that NEET cluster, causing average NEET candidates’ ranks to decrease.

Number of Candidates and Competition Level

The number of NEET applicants has recently surpassed 20 lakh (changed from 18 lakh in 2021), meaning any NEET candidate scoring the same marks to obtain a specific NEET rank received a significantly lower NEET rank compared to four years ago.

Seat Matrix, Reservation, and Quota Rules

Changes in the seat matrix (number of newly opened medical colleges, increase of MBBS seats) will have a small effect on the annual change in rank versus seat ratio.

Tie-Breaking and Normalization Rules

Ties are resolved first by comparing candidates’ biology scores, then by comparing chemistry scores, and finally by comparing the number of wrong answers, which means hundreds of positions of NEET rank can change from NEET candidates with identical NEET scores using these scoring tiebreaker methods

FAQs About NEET Marks vs Rank

How many marks are needed for around a 50,000 rank in NEET?

To secure admission within a rank of 50,000, a score between 575 to 600 is usually an ideal score for a candidate from the General category.

Is 600 marks enough for a government medical college in India?

Having a score of 600 would put a candidate in a borderline situation at the All India Quota General Category; their chances of getting a seat will considerably improve with OBC/SC/ST or State Quota placements.

What is the difference between qualifying marks and safe marks?

Qualifying scores are a representation of the score necessary to participate in counselling, whereas Safe marks refer to scores that provide a relatively strong chance of getting admission.

How accurate are rank predictors for NEET?

Rank predictors based on the NTA’s past 2-3 years’ worth of data to provide reasonably close estimates.

Does the same NEET score always get the same rank?

No. A candidate’s rank is dependent upon the number of candidates who took the exam and the distribution of scores; therefore, an identical score from one year may produce differing ranks in different years.

Can I use NEET PG marks vs rank the same way as UG?

No. NEET PG and UG use differing scoring systems, candidate pools, and seat matrix, so it is essential to reference MD/MS admission rank based on PG-specific data.
