Students seeking admission to postgraduate super-specialty (DM/MCh) courses can apply through the official counselling process conducted by the designated authorities. The application process is carried out online, and candidates must follow the guidelines issued by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) or the respective state counselling authorities.
More information about the application submission process can be obtained from your college and/or the College Admission Department website.
What Exactly Happened — And Why?
Every year, medical schools can make an appeal against a decision made by the NMC if they believe they should receive more new seats than are currently allocated to them. This appeals process is outlined in Section 28(5) of the NMC Act of 2019. When a college submits an appeal, it is evaluated by a group known as the First Appeal Committee, which examines the school’s facilities, staffing, and other criteria and decides if additional seats will be added.
During this latest appeal, five colleges submitted their appeals in March 2026. The First Appeal Committee met on April 01, 2026, to review all five colleges’ appeals and ultimately approved new super-special seats for each college. Collectively, there are approx, 8 new seats for the five colleges from the appeal.

What Is M.Ch And DM — Explained Simply
The definitions of M.Ch (Magister Chirurgiae) and DM (Doctorate of Medicine) are what we will be discussing in this summary. An M.Ch Degree is a 3-year advanced surgical degree that is awarded after completion of your M.S. Also, to earn a DM you must have previously completed your M.D. Degree. M.Ch and DM degrees are the most advanced in their area since they are the highest qualified degrees you can earn for performing surgery, as well as in the area of healthcare.
M.Ch and DM programs are 3 years long and very competitive. Cardiology and Urology are two of the most popular super-specialty courses in India.

The Big Deal—The Counselling Process May Proceed Without Delay
Counselling for these two types of degrees will occur “immediately” due to a recent statement from the National Medical Commission (NMC) that allows counselling authorities to include NMC-approved and published degree seats in their 2026 counselling process without waiting for the final issuance of LOP.
As per NMC’s public notification dated April 4, 2026, “Counselling authorities do not have to wait until LOPs are received from institutions to put those institutions into their counselling process.” Therefore, the ‘official list’ of seats that is posted on the NMC website shall provide the counselling authorities and colleges with valid documentation to conduct counselling for these seats.”
What Should Students Do Now?
Keep track of information from the MCC (or state counselling authority) if you have registered for super-specialty counselling for AY 2025–26. Newly allocated seats will be incorporated within the counselling pool; therefore, keep an eye on your options as they come in to fill your choice. You may also want to check the NMC website (nmc.org.in) and the MCC website (mcc.nic.in) often for updates on the seat matrix and counselling schedules.
