NEET Dress Code 2026: Complete Guidelines for NEET Exam Dress Code

NEET Dress Code 2026 at a Glance

The NEET Exam Dress Code has been established by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to enhance the security of the examination. The NEET dress code provides additional protection against unethical behavior as well as increasing the efficiency of exam operations. All candidates are required to comply with the NTA’s requirements. Failure to do so may result in late entry to the examination venue or being denied entry to the exam.

Latest Official NEET Dress Code Update

NEET 2026 is expected to be conducted in May 2026 (tentative, subject to NTA notification). The NTA has announced that the same dress code regulations apply to the NEET 2026 exam. As a result, all candidates are required to wear light-colored, short-sleeved tops; wear open-toe shoes; refrain from wearing metallic accessories or jewellery; and refrain from wearing electronic devices on their bodies. No updated information has been released by the NTA to date (April 2026).

What Is NEET Dress Code and Why It Matters

The NEET dress code is a mandatory dress and accessory protocol established by NTA that all candidates are required to adhere to on the day of the exam. The goal is to avoid the potential of cheating by facilitating a faster and more effective method of security and frisking with minimal and simple dress. Clothing items with large buttons or thick soles, metallic or multi-layered apparel may be used for concealment of small electronic devices or written notes that are not permitted in the exam hall.

By having a consistent and strict dress code for all NEET exam candidates, the NTA creates an opportunity for candidates to take the exam under fair and consistent conditions. Candidates who do not follow the NEET exam Dress Code (even unwittingly) may be delayed, required to undergo additional screening, or prevented from entering the exam hall.

NEET Dress Code for Male Candidates

Male candidates must adhere to the following dressing requirements:

  • Shirts/T-Shirts: Only half-sleeve shirts/t-shirts will be permitted. Full-sleeve shirts/t-shirts are prohibited.
  • Trousers/Pants: Only plain trousers or pants are allowed. Avoid multiple zippered pockets or large cargo pockets.
  • Bulky or layered clothing: Jackets, hoodies, cardigans, or layering is prohibited

NEET Dress Code for Female Candidates

There are slightly more specific guidelines for female candidates to accommodate the greater variety in available clothing options.

  • Tops/Kurtas: Only half-sleeve tops/shirts/kurtas in light colours will be allowed. Long sleeves/embellished sleeves are not acceptable.
  • Bottoms: Only simple salwars, plain trousers, and plain churidars will be permitted. Avoid jeans with embellishments, patches or large pockets.
  • No heavy embellishments/frills: Only use very basic/flat fabric; no embellishments like beads/sequins/metal-thread stitching/decorative buttons.
  • Jewellery: Earrings, nose rings, necklaces, bangles, and bracelets (all types) are not permitted.

Footwear Rules for NEET Exam

The enforcement of the NEET exam dress code for footwear is among the most stringent. Closed-toe footwear may conceal prohibited items such as equipment or material.

The permitted types of footwear are as follows:

  • Open sandals with an open-toe style
  • Flat slippers
  • Very low heel style sandals (extremely small heel)

The prohibited types of footwear are as follows:

  • Any kind of shoe including sports shoes, formal shoes, and canvas shoe
  • Boots or any footwear that covers the ankle
  • High heel shoes or wedges
  • Shoes with a thick sole
  • Socks are generally not allowed to avoid delays during frisking

Wear simple, easy-to-remove styles of footwear, as they will speed up your entrance through security and minimize your stress level while getting through the security check-in process.

Prohibited Items in NEET Exam Centre

You will not be able to bring the following items into the NEET exam centre:

  • Electronic devices (i.e. mobile phones, smart watches, digital watches, analogue watches, Bluetooth earphones, calculators, cameras, pagers, microchips, electronic pens, and other wireless devices)
  • Books containing information (i.e. textbooks, revision books, printed papers, rough sheets, pencil cases, geometry sets, written work)
  • Bags, purses, wallets, belt bags, sunglasses, coloured glasses (except if you are wearing them for religious reasons or for medical reasons)
  • Food or drink (i.e., pre-packaged food and, or beverage (including chocolate or sweets), unless you have a documented health issue that means you need to consume this type of item (i.e. diabetes). If you have diabetes, you will be able to carry sugar tablets or fruit to the exam centre, but you must notify them when you arrive at the exam centre.

Please note: You will be disqualified from participating if you have brought a mobile phone into the NEET exam centre and you may be disqualified from the exam. You will not be allowed to have your mobile phone turned off (as stated previously).

A good way to approach the NEET Exam Dress Code is to wear something light, simple, and non-stressful.

For Male Candidates

  • A Plain White Or Pale Blue Half Sleeve T-Shirt In Cotton Fabric Will Be Ideal.
  • The Trousers Or Pants Must Be Plain Cotton Without Any Durable Zippered Pockets.
  • Rubber Slippers With An Open Toe (Flats).

For Female Candidates

  • The Best Option Is A Plain, Pale, Half-Sleeve Cotton Kurta, Paired With Simple Salwar-Style Cotton Pants Of Your Chosen Color.
  • Footwear Must Be Flat Sandals Without A Heel.
  • You must wear your hair tied neatly in a simple ponytail with an elastic band.

Allowed Items to Carry

As per NTA guidelines and regulations, only the items below may be taken into the examination room:

  • A printed copy of your NEET 2026 Admission Card (with a recent passport-size picture affixed)
  • One postcard-size photo (to paste on the pro forma submitted to the proctor)
  • A valid original photo ID (Aadhaar card, passport, PAN card).
  • A transparent water bottle (no labels, no opaque material)
  • A small hand sanitizer (50ml or less, must be in a clear container)

Common NEET Dress Code Mistakes

  • A watch is prohibited: All watches (digital, analogue, or smart) must be removed prior to entering the examination room. Many students forget this.
  • Dark Colour: The NTA has requested candidates to wear light-colored clothing.
  • Full Sleeves: Due to the cold weather, students cover themselves in full-length clothing; however, this type of clothing is not permitted within the examination room.
  • Small Earrings or Other Small Jewelry: You are prohibited from wearing any items on your ears (e.g., studs, thin chains, etc.). You MUST remove all of your jewelry before entering the examination room.
  • Shoes: Many students mistakenly wear closed-toed shoes into the examination room. On the morning of the examination, wear sandals.
  • Not declaring customary dress: If you wear a hijab or turban and do not declare this to NTA before entering the exam, you may incur delays in entering the examination room.
