MBBS in Russia vs Kazakhstan: Which is Better for Indian Students?

MBBS in Russia vs Kazakhstan

Each year, many students from India pursue MBBS degrees outside of India, with Russia and Kazakhstan remaining two of the most popular choices. Out of the two countries, which offers a better deal for MBBS education in 2026? This information offers a detailed layout of these two countries, allowing you to make an informed decision regarding which country is best for you.

For many students in India, their dream of being a doctor has led them to apply to one of the many universities offering an MBBS program in Russia or Kazakhstan. As increasing numbers of Indian students are applying for MBBS programs, competition has become intense; therefore, many are considering pursuing their education abroad due to the expense difference and the recognition in India subject to National Medical Commission guidelines and licensing requirements. Traditionally, students seeking an MBBS education have chosen Russia; however, due to the rapid development of Kazakhstan as a popular choice to study an MBBS abroad, there is now fierce competition between these countries for students wishing to complete their MBBS degree. By selecting one of these countries, you can minimize the time and money spent obtaining your degree.

By reviewing the areas of cost of attending each country’s university, whether each country has recognition of the degree, visa requirements, and climate conditions for entry to India, what language each respective country’s MBBS degree offers as a means to conduct clinical training, when you will return to India after graduation, and what type of employment may be available in India once returned, this research will prepare you for making your final decision.

Fee Structure: Which Country is More Affordable?

Usually, the cost of study is the No. 1 determinant for families considering medical study abroad. Russia usually has MBBS prices varying between INR 20 and 45 Lakhs for a total of 6 years, depending on the university chosen. For example, Kazan, RUDN (Russian University), and Crimea Federal University are on average at the top end of price, with other mid-ranked universities costing less with the same recognition from the National Medical Commission.

Kazakhstan has relatively lower costs for the entire program of the MBBS. The cost of attending Kazakh National Medical University (KazNMU) or South Kazakhstan Medical Academy ranges from ₹18 to ₹35 lakhs. Both universities provide quality education at reasonable rates.

Living costs in both MBBS in Kazakhstan and MBBS in Russia are similar, which is between ₹8,000 and ₹15,000/month. The following table compares the two countries regarding key factors for an Indian student:

NMC Recognition and FMGE: The Most Important Factor

The most critical factor for Indian medical professionals, from a recognition perspective, is the NMC Recognition (of the National Medical Commission). Without NMC recognition, no (Indian) student will be able to register to work in India when they return after studying medicine. There is a huge advantage for students pursuing an MBBS in Russia due to the large number of NMC-recognized universities. As of today, there are over 100 Russian universities that have received NMC Recognition, giving students ample opportunity to study at a recognized institution while pursuing their medical degree. Keep in mind, not all Russian universities offer the same quality of education.

Kazakhstan has fewer universities that have received NMC Recognition for graduates of their medical programs; however, the major Kazakh universities where graduates have received NMC Recognition (KazNMU, Astana Medical University, and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University) have a strong reputation for providing quality medical education through adherence to acceptable standards of education. Students must be sure to review the NMC Recognition Listing before enrolling to study MBBS in Russia or Kazakhstan, especially if they intend to enroll during or after the FMGL regulation update in 2025-26.

Language of Instruction and Clinical Training

The most common obstacle students experience is the language barrier. Medical schools in Russia generally provide their classroom instruction in English; however, most clinical instruction in Russia occurs in a non-English language (Russian).

MBBS in Kazakhstan has placed a greater emphasis on providing students with access to English as a medium of instruction, as many graduates are now completing their core clinical training in English. In addition to providing students with fully English-taught medical programs, most Kazakh universities also provide students with courses in either Russian or Kazakh as a secondary language.

Quality of Clinical Exposure

Good doctors develop through experience; hands-on clinical training usually helps. The noteworthy number of patients seen in Russia’s large university hospitals makes Russia a beneficial and advantageous place to train. World-class hospitals are located in major cities such as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, and Volgograd, and they are connected to the medical schools in those same cities, providing students an opportunity to observe cases that are often complex.

Kazakhstan is working to improve the quality of clinical experience being provided to students; however, some smaller cities in Kazakhstan may provide limited opportunities for experiencing diversity in clinical experience in comparison to the cities listed above. If your primary concern is clinical experience, Russia is ahead; however, you must choose an appropriate university located in a large city.

Life in Russia vs. Life in Kazakhstan for Indian Students

Like academics, life abroad is very important for students. Many Indians studying in Russia have created a large, diverse Indian community in which you will be able to find Indian restaurants, cultural events, and student associations.

Kazakhstan is often considered student-friendly, with a simpler visa process and country to live and study in today. Because Kazakhstan is a majority-Muslim country, many Indian students (especially those from certain communities) will find it culturally comfortable. Kazakhstan is currently the easiest and most accessible country to emigrate to because the visa process is much simpler and the country experiences much less cultural friction.

FMGE / NEXT Exam: Cracking It After You Return

One of the most significant obstacles to returning from abroad will be passing the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination), which may be replaced by the NEXT exam in the future. This exam poses a challenge for both MBBS in Russia and MBBS in Kazakhstan students; however, the difficulty is evenly distributed among graduates of both countries. As a result of the disparity between international training and Indian exam candidates’ qualifications, the pass rate for the FMGE has remained around 15–25% nationally.

Graduates of both countries who select top-tier institutions and also study for the FMGE exam, which is geared specifically toward India, outperform by a significant margin.

Who Should Pick Russia and Who Should Pick Kazakhstan?

  • Pick Russia if you want access to a large number of universities—such as Tver State Medical University, Chechen State University, and Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University—that are recognized by the NMC, an array of clinics located in the major cities of Russia, and many clinical experiences during your education.
  • Pick Russia if you don’t mind learning some basic Russian to communicate with people as you go about your daily life, and desire to have a significant number of Indian friends around you.
  • Pick Kazakhstan if you want to be trained in Clinical Medicine at an English-speaking university and desire lower costs and stability associated with your training.
  • Pick Kazakhstan if you would prefer a shorter travel distance to get to India and if you would prefer a culturally more accessible environment.

In every case, confirm your school is approved by the Indian NMC, do not work with agents who are not recognized, and ensure that you study at a single institution for a minimum of 54 months.
