MBBS Course Duration in India 

In India, the MBBS course duration is 5.5 years (or 66 months). The National Medical Council requires that all public, private, and deemed medical colleges across India follow the same prescribed course of study during the course of their education.

The length of time spent in each component of the MBBS program can be broken down as follows:

  • The academic phase is divided into 4 professional phases covering basic and clinical subjects.
  • 1 Year Of Required Rotating Internship in a School-Associated Teaching Hospital

The current course objectives and format have been in place for many years now, and it is likely that they will be in place for the incoming class of 2026 as well.

Year-Wise Breakdown: MBBS in India

Phase I – Professional Year 1

This Phase consists of building a Scientific foundation in Medicine with subjects such as :

  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Biochemistry

Lecture classes, practical laboratories, and Dissections will be taken. After Phase I, each student must pass the First Professional University Examination to proceed to Phase II.

Phase II – Professional Year 2 (Mid-Professional Year 3)

This phase introduces the study of the disease with specific mechanisms relating to it. Subjects will include:

  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology
  • Microbiology
  • Forensic Medicine & Toxicology
  • Community Medicine (Part 1) 

During Phase II, students begin clinical exposure by attending hospital wards and observing patient care under supervision.

Phase III – Professional Part 1 (Mid Professional Year 3 – End of Month 15 of Professional Year 3)

There is a considerable shift toward clinical practice during this phase. Subjects will include:

  • Ophthalmology (Eye)
  • ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat)
  • Community Medicine (Part 2)

Phase IV – Professional Part 2 / Final Year (Professional Year 4 – 4.5)

Phase IV is a clinically intensive phase of education with:

  • General Medicine
  • General Surgery
  • Obstetric & Gynaecology
  • Pediatric
  • Psychiatry (Dependent on university)

Internship (1 Year Required)

The final stage is a 1-year mandatory rotating internship, where students gain real hospital experience across departments. Students rotate through departments including Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, and Community.

The MBBS course duration is quite similar across most countries, typically ranging between 5 to 6 years. Most MBBS courses offered by schools/colleges in other countries have a duration of either 5 years or 6 years, which typically includes the duration of a one-year internship.

Certain countries, i.e., Russia or China, provide for the completion of an MBBS course in six years. This period would consist of five years of academic/clinical courses and a one-year clinical rotation/internship. Georgia and the Philippines provide five-year MBBS programs. The fundamental concepts of learning appear to be consistent across different countries; however, the way these countries design and deliver the clinical training component of the program is different from the way the program is developed and delivered by the countries that provide six years to complete an MBBS degree.

India vs Abroad: MBBS Duration and Fees at a Glance

While the typical length of an MBBS course in India and Other countries (5.5 to 6 years) is similar, there are some significant differences between them, including:

  • Cost: If you attend a Private Medical College in India, your total cost might be between 5,000,000 and 10,000,000 rupees. On the other hand, if you choose to attend one of the countries to study medicine in Russian, Chinese, or Georgian University, the total cost of attending those institutions would range from 1,800,000 to 4,100,000 rupees for the entire 6-year program. There is no donation fee or Capitation Fee in any of these countries as well.
  • Seats: The availability of MBBS Seats in India is limited, with approximately 118,000 seats for over 2 million NEET-qualified candidates. Due to this intense competition for affordable government medical colleges, many students consider studying medicine abroad as a practical alternative.
  • Recognition: Only MBBS degrees from NMC-recognized foreign universities are valid in India after clearing the NEXT and FMGE exam. After your MBBS is completed, you will have to take a test called the NEXT test (formerly FMGE) to receive a License to Practice Medicine in India. This applies to all foreign MBBS graduates.
  • Language of Instruction: Most top universities in countries like Russia, China, and Georgia offer MBBS programs in English, making it easier for Indian students.

What happens after the MBBS Course Duration Ends?

Completing the MBBS Course is just the start of your clinical career, with several Continuing Education Options available. Upon completion of the Medical College;

  • MBBS in India:  You will have a Permanent Registration with the NMC, allowing you to work as a Doctor, and you are then eligible to appear for the NEET PG exam in order to continue your education through MD and/or MS. 
  • MBBS Abroad: You will need to take and complete the NEXT Exam before you will be allowed to work as a Doctor in India. Once you complete the NEXT, you will have the same options as a Graduate of an Indian Medical School – Post Graduate Education, Private Practice and/or Work for the Government.
  • International options: The MBBS from any of the recognised Medical Schools (Internationally) will allow you to take the USMLE (USA), PLAB (UK), and AMC (Australia) Examinations. This will qualify you to practice Medicine in those 3 Areas of the world, as well as be able to pursue other opportunities within the Global Health Environment.
